Fertile Ruin

Fertile Ruin is a speculative project exploring possible ways of reconverting the abandoned Aincourt Sanatorium into a research laboratory for ruin studies.

As a counterpoint to contemporary politics for the renovation of derelict buildings, this project takes on the form of a series of contextualised interventions that induce and build on the disintegration of the building whilst staging the progressive implantation of a research laboratory for ruin studies amidst the remains of the old Sanatorium.

The complex materiality generated by the relationship between new and ruined architecture becomes the source of a profound symbolic transformation of what the building once represented; a new paradigm emerging from the tension between site, ruin and project.
